FHA Systems Fully Restored After Global Tech Outage

Great news! The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has announced that its computer systems are fully operational again. This update comes as a relief after a global tech outage on Friday, July 19, disrupted services.

In a statement released today, the FHA confirmed, "The FHA system outages of Friday, July 19, 2024, have been resolved. All FHA systems are now fully operational. We apologize for any inconvenience these issues may have caused." 

The outage affected several federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). It was traced back to an issue with a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. The interaction between this update and Microsoft's Windows operating system caused widespread disruptions across both public and private sectors, impacting areas such as air travel, healthcare, retail, real estate, and mortgage industries.

Despite the challenges, HUD and its partners worked tirelessly over the weekend to restore services. A HUD spokesperson highlighted their quick response, saying, "HUD was informed of the global impact and worked with our partners to quickly restore any services negatively affected by the event. HUD works diligently to ensure the security, stability, and availability of services supporting the public."

Not only did government systems face issues, but the private sector also felt the impact. Loan origination systems and the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) also experienced disruptions but were swiftly brought back online by Saturday morning.

CrowdStrike and Microsoft proactively addressed the issue, clarifying that the disruption was due to a faulty software update, not a cyberattack.
